IRL - In Real Life, Love, and Liberty

Debtors’ prisons exist. Today. In the United States. In Louisiana. In Michigan. In Colorado. And…. in New Hampshire. Judges have been jailing people for failing to pay a fine without investigating whether they have any ability to pay their fine. The ACLU-NH has taken on this problem, issued a report (http://aclu-nh.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/Final-ACLU-Debtors-Prisons-Report-9.23.15.pdf), and is well on the way to correcting it with rule changes, judicial education, and an alternative sentencing project.
